How to deal with stress: what to do when you’re stressed

Stress is the result of the tension that our body acquires in the face of external threats.  When something around you demands a more intense response, your body prepares to, if necessary in the last case, save life. Therefore, there is positive stress: the one that makes us stay alert.

The important thing is to learn to manage stress through different techniques. A situation will stop being stressful when you consider it so. Each one considers stressful a different thing. In fact, you may be stressed by speaking in public, but someone else may think that it is much worse to have to have a private conversation with someone special.

At this point, it is necessary to make a small paragraph. It is completely normal that at some specific moments in your life you suffer some stress: when work piles up, when you face a new challenge… These stressful situations are part of your day to day and you can overcome them with more or less effort. However, chronic negative stress is cause for concern, as it can have more serious consequences such as headaches, insomnia or anxiety.

Techniques to relieve stress

There are various ways to reduce stress. Try not to demand so much of yourself that will reduce your anxietyAlso, and although it seems obvious, try to eliminate all the negative aspects of your life: stay away from those people who drive you crazy, avoid frustrating situations, etc. When you are stressed, try to change your routine and do not have absolutely everything scheduled because, if something goes out of your schemes, it will cause you even more stress.

Take a hot shower, imagine yourself in a relaxing place, listen to relaxing music, and keep a journal to help you reflect… In addition, relaxation techniques can be very useful. Stop for a moment and take a deep breath: try to make your stomach move more than your chest and while you take your breath, slowly count to 10.

Physical exercise is also a good way to relieve stress because by doing it you release endorphins, which gives you pleasure. Dedicate a little more time to what you like: go for a walk in the countryside, read, and watch a movie… And as with everything, it is essential  to eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep.

If you consider that you cannot overcome stress on your own, go to an expert and ask for advice. You should not feel bad because only a professional will help you out of this little bump. If you let it go, what is now a stone can become a mountain?
